Summit County Need to Know: March 2025

Snowpack Update from Utah Division of Water Resources

Utah's snowpack is sitting at 104% of average, but only 88% of our typical April 3 peak. With a very warm week ahead of us, (temperatures 20° above normal Wednesday and Thursday) we could lose most of our low- and mid-level snowpack by the end of the week. Have we hit our peak already? Time will tell, but this week won't be kind to our snowpack totals. The weather pattern gets a bit more active later this week, though the storm won't bring too much to our snowpack up high.

🐕 Animal Control County Code of the Month

For the month of March, Animal Control would like to spotlight county code 5-1-5 “Failure to License” and 5-1-6 "Failure to Display Tags."

  • According to code, all dogs over the age of four months must be licensed if they are staying in Summit County for 30 consecutive days or more. The license tag must be attached to the collar and worn at all times along with their rabies tag.

  • A lost tag may be replaced with a fee of $5 if the license is current. Annual license fees for a 1-year tag are $36 per unsterilized dog and $12 per sterilized dog. Three-year licenses are $50/unsterilized and $20/sterilized and coincide with rabies vaccinations.

💧 Lead in Water Testing for Utah (and Summit County) Schools

Utah has reached a national milestone, becoming the first state in the U.S. to test 100% of K-12 schools for lead in their drinking water. Through the Utah Division of Drinking Water Lead-Free Learning Initiative, 1,158 samples from public, charter, private, and childcare facilities were tested for lead contamination. The Environmental Health team at Summit County Health directly collaborated with UtahDEQ to assist in this effort to protect our kids through testing drinking water in schools.
