I-80 construction at Jeremy Ranch, fees and free services, and housing ideas

Happy Pioneer Day!

All county offices are closed tomorrow, July 24, in observance of the state holiday. The Sheriff’s Office and local fire/EMS crews will have limited staff working throughout the day.

Summit County offices will return to regular hours on Monday, July 27. Republic Services will be following their normal service schedule for trash and recycling collection.

As a reminder, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are still in effect for all unincorporated and state lands in Summit County. That means no discharging or using fireworks or pyrotechnic devices, as well as:

  • NO OPEN FIRES OF ANY KIND on state and unincorporated lands.

  • No Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, trailer, or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area that is paved or free from dry vegetation.

  • No tracer ammunition or exploding targets.

  • No cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas of dry vegetation.

  • No operating a motorcycle, chainsaw, ATV, or other small internal combustion engine without an approved and working spark arrestor.

Eastern Summit County Wood Chipping Program

Attention Eastern Summit County property owners! Our wood chipping crew is looking for more work in North and South Summit to finish out the season. This is a FREE service for residents to help with wildfire mitigation by reducing fuels on your property.

Jeremy Ranch Bridge Project

On Monday, August 3, 2026, UDOT will begin construction on the Jeremy Ranch Bridges project. The project entails replacing two bridges on Interstate 80 (I-80) at the Jeremy Ranch interchange using the Accelerated Bridge Construction method. This technique lets UDOT build the new bridges next to the freeway, before sliding them into place during a short closure, reducing months of traffic impacts.

What to Expect During Construction

  • Lane closures on Homestead Road throughout construction

  • Day work Monday–Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Night work as needed

  • Trail shifted to the road

  • Trucks entering and exiting the work zone

  • Increased noise, dust, and vibration in the project area

  • Up to two weekends of full road closures on I-80 at Jeremy Ranch in 2027

Solid Waste Services Fee Due August 4

Friendly reminder: your annual Solid Waste Services Fee is due August 4, 2026. Summit County contracts with Republic Services to handle billing and fee collection. Please log in to your Republic Services account to complete your payment.

At $80 per year, this fee remains substantially below the actual cost to operate local household waste and recycling collection. Click here to learn more about the Solid Waste Services Fee.

Proposals to Address Housing Shortfall

The Summit County Housing Authority has the expansive and challenging task of helping all community members access safe, quality, and affordable housing.

In the latest article written by a housing commissioner, Vice Chair Rich Sonntag shares three proposals to meet the needs of the workforce and make real progress towards the housing authority’s goal.

“Ultimately, financial resources to subsidize affordable housing are limited. Some people suggest just letting things continue as they are with much of our workforce commuting from Salt Lake, Heber, or even Evanston. However, this won’t work in the long run, as the continued expansion of our resorts will ultimately lead to complete local gridlock as residents, resort guests, and commuting workforce all hit the roads at once. We can avoid (or at least delay) this approaching carmageddon with strategies such as..."

  1. Exploring whether future public open space acquisitions might also provide opportunities for affordable and workforce housing.

  2. Locating remaining infill sites that are most suitable for housing and identify ally organizations and financial resources to develop those sites.

  3. Increasing the size of permitted ADUs from 1,000 square feet to 2,000 square feet on properties of at least an acre in size.

Help Kimball Junction Library with “Check Out the Move”

Every book, movie, puzzle, or game you borrow from the Kimball Junction library branch is one less item to pack, move, and shelve as we prepare to move to a new location in the PEAK Center.

Between August 1–15, we encourage everyone to stock up on their favorites while we make the move. Materials checked out during the Check Out the Move promotion will receive extended due dates into October.
