Summit County acquires Highland Flat parcel for open space & community use

Summit County has completed the acquisition of the Highland Flat parcel (Tax Parcel SS-32-B), a 25-acre property located at the US Hwy 40 / I‑80 gateway. The purchase reflects the county’s ongoing commitment to preserving open space, protecting the area’s rural character, and ensuring long-term public benefit for residents.

The acquisition was made possible through the county’s voter-approved General Obligation (GO) bond program, which allocated funding specifically for the protection of recreational open space and community-serving lands throughout Summit County.

Summit County intends to keep the property largely open, prioritizing uses that align with community values rather than intensive development. Future uses under consideration include:

  • Continued agricultural use, supporting local heritage and land stewardship

  • Development of passive recreational amenities, such as trails

  • Potential community-focused features like a dog park or equestrian arena

  • Consideration of limited, carefully planned community-serving facility, if appropriate

Primary Elections Info 

Primary Elections are June 23, 2026! 

The Summit County Clerk’s Office began mailing ballots earlier this week, on June 2, so check your mailboxes! If you do not receive a ballot, but believe you should have, please email [email protected].  

Important Dates for the Primaries: 

  • Ballot Request Deadline: Speaking of mailed ballots, if you are registered as a Republican, you will receive a Republican ballot. If you are registered as a Democrat, you will receive a Democratic ballot. Any registered voter can request a Democratic ballot at summitcounty.info/ballotrequest by June 12, 2026. You can only vote in one Primary Election. 

  • Voter Registration Deadline: The deadline to register to vote and receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the 2026 Primaries is also June 12, 2026. The easiest way to check your voter registration status or register to vote if you have an up-to-date Utah driver’s license is to go to voter.utah.gov. Voters who are not registered to vote by June 12, 2026, but are otherwise eligible to vote, may vote provisionally in person during early voting and on Primary Election Day.

  • Early Voting starts in less than two weeks: Early voting for the 2026 Primary Elections will be open: 

    • Tuesday, June 16, 2026

    • Wednesday, June 17, 2026

    • Thursday, June 18, 2026

    • Saturday, June 20, 2026 

*Please note that Early Voting will not be available on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday.

Free community event - Memories of Rockport

  • When: Thursday, June 18 - 6:30 PM

  • Where: The Old Church at Rockport State Park | 2719 South Rockport Rd.

As part of this year’s One Book One Community selection, join the Summit County Library and guest speaker Alan Siddoway to learn about his family’s experience in the town of Rockport before it was submerged under Rockport Reservoir over 70 years ago.

This Weekend: Trails, Trash, & Tunes

Summit County’s Stormwater Coalition will celebrate National Trails Day with the return of Trails, Trash and Tunes. Come and participate in a community cleanup and weed pull, enjoy live music, kids' activities, and give back to the land in honor of National Trails Day. Free lunch for the first 50 participants! Attendees can also earn raffle tickets and win prizes by visiting the educational booths staffed by local partners and county employees.
